What are Meditations?
When you hear the word meditation, you often think of someone sitting cross legged humming ommmm. But the truth is, it’s much more than that. Meditation has been around for thousands of years. In today’s world it is predominantly used to support us with our busy lives, to help calm our often fried nervous systems. At its essence, meditation is presence. Across traditions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, meditation has long been a path to inner peace, compassion, and awakening. Yet it does not require any belief system. It only asks for your willingness to be present.
What I love about meditation is it’s not just about sitting silently with your eyes closed trying to reach Nirvana. Or spending hours trying to be still. It can be super short, or as long as you like! It’s a gentle practice of turning inward — away from noise, distraction, and striving — and toward the quiet wisdom of your own heart. It’s also meditation when you are washing the dishes, focused on the task at hand, quietly and slowly, mindfully, being right there in that moment. It’s walking in nature and watching the birds fly, the butterflies land on the leaf, the waves of the ocean you’re walking by. It can be sitting in the sun and feeling the rays fill you up with their warmth and light. Meditation is in the smallest most accessible moments of your day. Because in meditation, you are not trying to fix yourself or become someone new. You are simply being fully present, remembering who you are beneath the surface of thought.
Through regular practice, meditation can:
- Cultivate inner calm
- Deepen self-awareness
- Open the heart
- Strengthen compassion
- Bring clarity to the mind
Even a few quiet minutes each day can reconnect you to stillness, to breath, to being.
Meditation is not an escape from life — it is a deeper way of meeting it
